Key Characteristics

The following are true of qualitative data:

  • The term refers to data that can be observed and are not numerical in nature.

  • This type of data describes qualities.

  • They cannot be analyzed using most measures of central tendency and range.

  • This type of data is also known as categorical data.

  • This can be measured using the mode.

Example

Anecdotal data reflects a subjective description of a situation that may or may not produce quantitative data.

Nominal data, such as gender, are examples of qualitative data.

This package of fruit looks overripe and has a strong aroma.

Non-example

Examples of measures that provide quantitative data include the following:

  • Height

  • Weight

  • Age

  • Elapsed time

This package of fruit contains eight apples and weighs two pounds two ounces.
