Key Characteristics

The following are true of composition of numbers:

  • To compose is to put together two or more parts.

  • To compose numbers can mean to add positive rational numbers.

  • To compose numbers can also mean to multiply natural numbers other than one, which would create a composite number.

Note: In Algebra II and subsequent coursework, the verb "compose" refers to a function operation that combines functions to make new ones.
