Notice the coordinates of the indicated points on the graph, including the vertex (minimum) at (1, -8).
The shape of the parabola is revealed in studying the y-values as the x-values change by 1 unit for each ordered pair listed. Notice the y-values are decreasing until you see the minimum, then the y-values increase - thus revealing the symmetry of the parabola.
