When you hear the word bacteria, what normally pops into your mind? When most people think about bacteria or microbes they think of disease and sickness, when, in fact, bacteria are beneficial to animals, plants, and the environment!

Microorganisms such as bacteria can be found everywhere! Some live in areas where temperatures are extreme. Some live without oxygen. Bacteria live on your skin, in your mouth, inside your body, and even in the air! The microorganisms that live in and on the human body are called 'the normal flora' of humans. There are hundreds of different kinds of bacteria that live on, in, and around humans. Fortunately, most of these are not harmful, and some of them even help maintain homeostasis. Bacteria also benefit the environment in many different ways. On the other hand, there are some bad bacteria, too!
