Harry S. Truman became president after the death of Franklin D. Roosevelt. Faced with many major decisions upon his swearing in, Truman tackled problems that would change the United States forever. He had to end World War II in both Europe and Asia; he also had to deal with the strained relationship between the United States and the Soviet Union.

There are several foreign policies that were formed during his presidency that shaped how the United States would deal with the tension in the relationship with the Soviet Union. One policy was created to prevent the expansion of the influence of the Soviet Union. Containment was the focus of this policy called The Truman Doctrine.
