Consider this: Berlin was now divided four ways, and more than two million people lived in its three western sectors. But on June 24, 1948, the Soviet Union cut off the food and supplies that were being carried into those western sectors daily by road, rail, and river barge.

This was known as the Berlin Blockade. It lasted from June 24, 1948 until May 12, 1949. The purpose of the Berlin Blockade was for the Soviets to cut off the western forces (American, British, and France) that were supplying the people of Berlin with food and other supplies that they needed.
