As the Spanish began to colonize more in Mexico, the Aztec population declined as a result of the increase of exposure to disease. The Spanish eventually developed large island plantations for growing sugar. The plantation owners imported African slaves since the Aztec population had declined.

The Columbian Exchange diagram displays items that came from the Americas to Europe, Africa, and Asia and from Europe, Africa, and Asia to the Americans as a result of Columbus' exploration to the New World.
